A note on solo alpine backpacking: Since the late Aughts I have carried a can of bear mace with me when I head into the wilderness. I try to keep this can as easily accessible as possible but my camera, for some reason, is always closer at hand. I turned this corner on approach to Lake Kathrine and not only was I faced with a large, health big horn but a predicament. What do I reach for? I reached for my camera, nothing but a normal 50mm attached, and luckily, while I made my exposure, this fine gentle creature decided I was no threat.
